** Lost Again **
We have lost one more Cricket Test match to the Aussies in Australia (that too within 4 days). No doubt that Aussies are the mighty team around and are a formidable opponent. However, what puts us to shame is the way we capitulated. We didnt even score 200 in both the innings - especially with the much talked about and glorified batting line up that we have (on paper). Losing without fighting is painful.

She is gone. Assassinated. The sort of death that no one wishes to meet. Our condolences to her family and friends.
But what surprises me is the views expressed by our Indian politicians. They say that we have lost a great friend of India !! Was she one?? They say that if she had been around as a premier, our relationship would be very rosy. Would that be?? She had been PM of Pak twice and on both the occasions our relationship with Pak was not so cordial. Support to Kashmir militants and Terrorism continued unabated during her regime. Offering condolences is fine - but making absurd statements is ridiculous.

** Manipulating History?? **
I happened to check the information on "Karunanidhi" and "Jayalalitha" in Wikipedia. After going through the information provided therein, I checked the date (it was originally added to Wikipedia in 2007 ) and that made things more clear to me. You can quote these two pages as a best example to remind people on how 'history' can be twisted to suit people's convenience.
Per Wikipedia, Karunanidhi is THE best and everything about Jayalalitha carries a negative angle to it (for the simple reason that this article was pushed in during the reign of Karunanidhi -i.e in 2007). There is no neutrality in either of the articles. We all know how "Anna" was made as the 'Universal Leader' !! That made me think on the possibility of 'Akbar' having too many wonderful 'fan-followers' like "Kazhaga Kanmanigal" who kept his name aloft with slogans like "Akbar naamam Vazhaga". That could be one of the reasons for all our school text books praising Akbar and branding Aurangazeb as a sort of villain !!

** Modi's Victory **
Narendra Modi has won the State Assembly Elections, for the third time. Shall we call this as a victory to Modi's administrative powers? He did not bank on VHP or some of the heavy weights of BJP ... he banked on his performance and the people have rewarded him with enough seats. People like Keshubhai Patel, one of the heavy weights of BJP, openly canvassed for his defeat and have failed miserably. On the other side, Congress tried its best to play the communal card by projecting itself as a saviour of Minority (means Muslims) and they too failed miserably. Its the Administrative powers of Modi that has won him this election. Results of every parameter that was taken to judge his performance in the last five years were all on the 'plus' side. Out of 182 seats, Modi has won 117 for the BJP, the congress alliance has won 62 and "Others" have won 3. Hope he takes Gujarat further on its march to glory. When are the Tamilians and most of our citizens going to learn to vote based on the performance and not on the freebies and caste feelings?

** Military Solution ?? **
I have heard a lot of people say that the best solution to all of India's problems is through our Military might (can be heard more from the Indians living in America).
After having seen the might of American forces and probably having read all those articles that speak of India's economic resurgence.. ... are we getting carried away? I am not here to criticise anyone's view on the subject !! I thought of "thinking aloud" on how sound is our logical thinking on this front !! The following may look scattered - but so is the subject, which has numerous links and leads. Here are my thoughts.....
"India is not USA" - That is what comes to my mind first. USA is economically strong and is a developed nation, which can afford to invest millions and millions of dollars in "war" games. India?? The whole media-world can project a rosy picture about Indian economy. Yes, the media also do project about the darker side as well, albeit in a smaller insignificant corner. Reality is, ours is a nation where a farmer commits suicide every 32 minutes (this is a Govt provided stat) - just because they are not able to pay back their loan and Govt cannot afford to write off their loan. The point I wish to maker here is, we can not afford to waste millions and millions of dollars in "war" games.
Secondly, USA can afford to invade Iraq, Iran.. and erect iron barricades around its borders and help its citizen's live peacefully. How many civilians (NO, not army personnel - but civilians) in USA lost their life due to the Iraq invasion? If only one surveys any crowded places like Railway stations in India - it would be glaringly visible on how easy it is to plant a bomb anywhere, if only its in possession. Ours is a country that can be sneaked in from all sides (we have people right in the Govt set up who support terrorist organisation like LTTE).
So - What is the solution? Do we keep silent to the atrocities being committed on our Nation? Do we remain mute and meek? - NO - is the answer. Not going to war does not symbolise timidity. Instead, I am of the opinion that the laws of this land, especially against terrorism should be stronger, faster and deadlier. One should fear committing an act of terrorism and supporting an act of terrorism in this land. Even suicide bombing is not possible without support. Let those who even dreams of supporting terrorism realise that it is going to cost them dearly. Unfortunately, ours is a land, where one can commit a crime, kill hundreds of people and still do not get punished for years.
A military solution should only be a last solution - a last one, when we are left with no other choice. We may win a decisive battle against our neighbours who bleed us. Regionally, YES, we are a stronger force (atleast by sheer numbers). But, how much a war will set us back is everyones guess. And also, what could be the colateral damage? (Please bear it in mind that ours is a nation where we conduct State elections in phases and not in a single day - even in the comparatively peaceful states - for security reasons !!).
Media reports can often be misleading. Our decision to go to war should not be based on media reports. Let me quote a few examples here. We hear a lot of "feel good" reports on our "indigenisation" efforts. Its all nothing but empty promises. A few years before you all must have read the huge success story of our Main Battle Tank (MBT) production (Arjun), as the first MBT was rolled out of Avadi factories by our Defence Minister. Did anyone of you hear anything about that afterwards? Well, the truth is, now, we are negotiating on purchasing MBTs from Russia. So goes the story of all those 'successful' missiles with fancy names that were developed and tested by DRDO. If you go investigating the details, all you would get in reply is - "Defence secrets". Unfortunately, we cannot get to know those "secrets" even though our intention would only be of a noble one - that of making our Defence forces stronger.
The following may slightly look to be off the target - nevertheless, it too must be considered when we talk about our "Military" might and "Military" solution (infact, I feel that the following is the most relevant aspect of a war)
Talking of the Soldier community, do we know the actual living standard of this huge work force? Do you all know how these poor folks are treated? Have you ever spoken to any of our Soldier folks? (NO - dont go by the TV footages!). Friends, the ground reality is not rosy!! If only you want to taste the "Pre Independence British fiefdom" - just join the Indian Armed Forces as a Soldier. I dont wish to elaborate much on this. "British fiefdom" is only one of the sufferings of the soldier. The another worse facet is the 'robbery' that he is being subjected to. Even the most essential protective dress gear that are specially meant to protect him from the adverse weather conditions are being siphoned off (luckily we got to hear that scandal - one out of the numerous that could not be swept under the carpet). The Soldier that you all take pride about isnt actually a happy man. Fight they WILL for the sake of the nation and give their life - but he isnt the one who leads a happy life. (Did you get to hear about the spate of recent suicides in Army? Again, if you are going to believe the media reports stating that the suicides are due to sheer 'work pressure' - I pity you!)
To sum up, I am of the view that - (a) Military option is not the solution for our problems (b) In an era when we are doing away with laws like TADA, we need strict laws to curb terrorism (c) Media reports on our 'might' are more misleading (d) our 'indigenisation' efforts dish out more fake stories than the reality (e) we have more filth within the organisation than from external elements (f) the solider out there who is ultimately going to face the battle field is not a happy man.
Well, these are just my views - shall we say "another side of the coin" view ?

** Beautification of Marina **
Rupees Seven crore has been alloted for beautification of Marina Beach. Over the years, crores of rupees has been allocated for beautification of Marina beach - but I havent seen any beautification done .... have you? - probably its "Beautification (on the name of) Marina" - houses of so many ministers and their followers would definitely must have been beautified. Thats Indian Democracy for you.

** Pseudo Secularism **
Another anniversary celebration for all those who lost their lives during Parliament attack that took place in 2001 was celebrated. All the top ranked VIPs, including the PM, Home Secretary attended the function that was organised in the Parliament.
I am not going to talk about the grants and promises that did not reach the kin of victims, as it is only common and one of those common incidences in our nation (one of the victim's kin went inconsolable right in front of the PM in the very Parliament).
But do we know what happened to the master mind, Mullah Afzhal Guru ? He was convicted and a death sentence was awared! But till date, he is alive and kicking!!! Thanks to our Politicians. Do you know who carried his mercy petition to the Govt ? It was none other than the Chief Minister of J&K, Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad. Another terrorist, SAR Gheelani who happens to live right in New Delhi as a 'professor' and who escaped from the shackles of law by using the numerous loop holes, has come to the defence of this terrorist Afzhal Guru. All the political parties of J&K are in favour of giving clemency to Afzhal Guru. Because, to all those terrorist mullahs and the pseudo-secular political parties death of people defending terrorism and the suffering of their kith and kin does not matter; the dignity and respectability of the Nation does not matter - all that matters are VOTEs !! Jai Hind !!

** Taxi No. 9211 **
Yesterday, I saw the movie "Taxi No. 9211", a Hindi movie, on TV. It was a real good movie and I enjoyed watching it. Out of so many filth that is being dished out, we do get to watch one odd such good movies which has become a scarce commodity. I do not know whether this movie was a commercial success, as invariably all such good movies flops. Its all about tussle between two brats - a rich one (John Abraham) and a poor one (Nana Patekar). If you get a chance, dont miss out on this. A good movie and a good entertainer.

** Glorifying Terrorism ?? **
Its being alleged that Sohrabuddin was killed in a fake encounter by Gujarat Police (Police confessed to such an act in court). Narendra Modi in one of his election campaign speech justified the police action (mind you, Sohrabuddin was in the books of police in four states). Ram Jethmalini has filed a case; Congress is crying hoarse. How can people jump to the defence of terrorists and against those who kill them? In my view, anti national elements should be killed - be it through legal means or through fake encounters. What does the defenders of people like Sohrabuddin want? Allow the buggers to roam free, bomb places and keep murdering innocents? The level to which people stoop low, for the sake of votes, is really a sorry state of affairs in India.

Malaysian Govt has arrested the top leaders of Hindraf (Hindu Rights Action Force) for spearheading an agitation against the Malaysian Govt seeking equal rights for Malaysian Tamils, especially the Hindus. How can a Muslim majority country tolerate this? The Govt has sprung to action and arrested the leaders of the group under stringent laws which ensures a minimum of two years in jail. While the Tamils voice discrimination and indiscriminate demolition of Hindu temples, Malaysian Govt says that it provides equal opportunity.
Time will tell us whether we have another Sri Lanka in the making !!

** Driving **

I cant miss having this info recorded in my blog.
13 Dec 2007 - something simple and special happened in my life. Not a great deal though, but still.....
I drove to my office in "our" car. For one who started his life with a stipend of Rs.950/- this is no mean achievement. It was indeed a special feeling and I enjoyed it. Materialistic???... So be it ;o) [ mind you, that stipend includes a hair cut allowance of Rs.10/- :o) ]
But honestly speaking, driving in Chennai is very tiring, especially if you are a learner. Its literally mad out there. Today, I left office with full of energy only to reach home damn tired. I literally sensed my tiredness. I am, at this point, a bit terrified and scared of driving as I am still a beginner and a learner; but still wont like to give it up. 13 Dec 2007 - something simple and special happened in my life. Not a great deal though, but still.....
I drove to my office in "our" car. For one who started his life with a stipend of Rs.950/- this is no mean achievement. It was indeed a special feeling and I enjoyed it. Materialistic???... So be it ;o) [ mind you, that stipend includes a hair cut allowance of Rs.10/- :o) ]
But honestly speaking, driving in Chennai is very tiring, especially if you are a learner. Its literally mad out there. Today, I left office with full of energy only to reach home damn tired. I literally sensed my tiredness. I am, at this point, a bit terrified and scared of driving as I am still a beginner and a learner; but still wont like to give it up. ** Mobile Communication - INDUS **

There are few things that leaves you wondering as to why haven't they been done before. One such latest is the formation of a new company called "Indus Towers Ltd". Telecom giants in India, Bharati, Vodafone(formerly Hutch in India) and Idea have joined together and have decided to start the company "Indus Towers Ltd". Now Indus Towers will erect towers all over the country and the facilities will be shared by all the three. Instead of 3 towers for a small zone for 3 different companies - you just need one now; which also means that two more towers can be erected in two other zones thus encompassing a large area at highly economical rate. Hope our "comrade" BSNL is not caught napping ! :o) zzzz...

A Judge in a New York court, was too annoyed and distracted by a cell phone that began ringing while his court session was in progress. No one owned up responsibility when he asked all those present in the court as to who was the owner of the cell phone that was just ringing. He, it seems, had said, "I must know whose cell phone was just ringing, else, I am going to send everyone of you to jail". All those 46 present in the court did not own responsibility and judge. What the judge did next was an atrocious act - he sent everyone of them to jail. Later in the day all those were released. Latest news confirm that the Judge, Robert Restaino, was removed on Tuesday by a State judicial panel. (Source: The Hindu)

A lot of things have been said and written about the recent political events that unfolded in Karnataka. What happened in Karnataka was just nothing but political mockery played at its zenith by the master of the trade, Deva Gowda. Given the sort of politician he is, it is no surprise that he did what he did without any shame or remorse. The label "Ex-PM" never stopped him from stooping so low. Without taking the sides of either BJP or Congress (both victims of Deva Gowda's foul play) or going into the whole details of what happened, I think, this is one of the worst form of political gimmick that we have ever witnessed. Pity is, we are likely to witness many more such filth. God Bless this Nation.

A friend of mine living in US had asked me on whats happening in Singara Chennai. I sent a reply, which I think is fit enough to be recorded in our blog... Here is what I wrote.
News about Singara Chennai .....????
This may be a myopic view of mine - but, as far as I see, this place is getting more and more crowded and it keeps increasing every day. That doesnt stop people from spending more and more to buy houses in the crowded city and making it more and more unlivable. Let us take the case of Arcot Road, close to which I live and commute every day.
Right at this time of sending out this mail, numerous flats are under construction in and around Arcot road. According to an available estimate, around 7500 houses are going to be added within the next few days (flats already under construction). As per the available trend, a small single bedroom house would cost around 30 lakhs (lowest). And a person who can spend 30 lakhs would be in possession of a car or would be getting one in a few days time. So, add 7500 cars to our narrow and filthy Arcot road.
If one thinks that this is all - I would consider him/her naive - because, I have not added shopping malls and multipliex theatres !! The old National theatre has been demolished and a new multiplex cinema theatre is under construction. So add another atleast 500 more vehicles (lowest estimate). And there is one huge shopping complex coming up at Alwarthirunagar junction. All these things are going to happen within the next two or three years. But not a single effort has been made to widen the awfuly encroached upon, crowded and narrow Arcot roads.
I would say that if you dont have any specific reason to live in Chennai - you should consider quitting the city to go and live in a remote village - far and away from the maddening crowd. That, in fact, is my retirement plan, if I happen to live till that time !!

While writing about the growth of Telecommunication in India, I had mentioned that the present growth and development of Telecommunication is truly due to the vision and courage of two individuals - Rajiv Gandhi and Sam Pitorda.
While writing that, I could not help but remember VP Singh, who, in my view, is the worst ever PM that India had ever had. While two individuals helped India on the path of growth, VP Singh single handedly managed to destroy India to a greater extent. What Pakistan could not do was successfully done by this person named VP Singh. He implemented the Mandal Commission that set the nation on fire. To counter that, Advani started the Rath Yatra. Mandal and Rath Yatra are two things that have changed the face of India to a greater extent. We would have been a lot better without those two. But who can win the destiny?

Pete Sampras defeated Roger Federer in an exhibition match in Macau. While Federer had already won two of the three matches earlier, this victory of Pete over Roger is something that I thought was impossible. Pete having retired a few years before, coming back to win the present world No.1 Federer is something out of the world. Pete later said that he wanted to win atleast one set in the 3 matches. It may be an exhibition match, but credit should be given to Pete Sampras for his talent.

The second phase of the "Flying Train" from Thirumailai to Velachery was opened to public on 19 Nov 2007. See some of the interesting facts below...
Conceived way back in 1984, the first phase of the project (between Beach Station and Mylapore) was completed in 1997 at a cost of Rs 269 crore (fully met by Railways with the State Govt just giving the land free of cost).
The second phase from Tirumailai to Velachery, a distance of 10.8 Kms has incurred an exp of over Rs.777 crores. (State Govt and Railways shared the cost at 2:1 ratio)
It took nearly 36 years for the railways to complete the first two phases of the elevated project.
Three more phases — Velachery to St. Thomas Mount, St.Thomas Mount to Villivakkam and Villivakkam to Enoore — are to be completed.

As said, in my view, Rajiv Gandhi and Sam Pitorda were the chief architects of the communication boom in India. Major initiatives include formation of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (VSNL). International gateway packet switch system was commissioned in Bombay.
Also, the P&T Department was divided to form two separate entities - Department of Posts and the Department of Telecommunications. Constitution of Telecom Commission, and the reorganisation of telecommunication circles were done. All these measures helped faster growth of Telecommunication in India. Above all, the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) was formed, which is doing a wonderful service now, in settling various disputes between service providers and also setting path for various initiatives.
Later, based on the above initiatives, the national long-distance service was opened up for private participation and BSNL was set up. All these helped everyone realise the huge customer base and potential that India had. The strength of "internal" market in India cannot be under estimated. It is this internal market that helped India take communication to the next level - Mobile communication.
Just look at the ocean of difference between the service that was provided by P&T during those days and the service and facilities that we have today on the communication front. Even during those days we had a huge customer base, potential and everything - but yet, there was no vision and foresight at the top level. The communication boom that we have today is due to Rajiv Gandhi and Sam Pitorda - who had laid a very strong foundation for the huge stylish structure that we have today.

I had mentioned in my previous series that both Rajiv Gandhi, the then PM of India, and Sam Pitorda were the two central figures for the Telecom revolution in India. In the early 80s, in India, telephones were considered a sign of luxury and it existed only in the residence of higher income group people. Sam Pitorda stepped in to change the whole scenario. He formed the C-Dot, which brought in the "yellow board"-ed PCOs across the nation. C-Dot gave to India the local telephone meters that generated bills for every local call (earlier it was centralised and only Telephone exchanges generated bills.)
It was in the late 80s that PCOs became too famous in India. It spread across India like a wildfire. It, in my view, served two distinct benefits. The much wanted communication network - the prime purpose and also was a source of livelihood to a lot of many people. (Importantly, it helped a lot of handicapped people who were seen maintaining PCOs which gave them a source of livelihood).
If India could boast of its IT today, it is solely because of the initiatives of Rajiv & Sam. Rajiv was the one who sowed the seeds of our today's growth. Digitalisation and Satellite communication helped the faster growth of Telecommunication in India.
The next big change came in the early 90s. It was during PV Narasimha Rao's regime that the Telecommunication sector was set free from the Govt monopoly. Private operators were allowed to try out their hands. This led to the growth of Mobile communication in India and it also helped India get some well needed foreign investment. Initially, it was started in just four metros and even in metros, the number of operators were restricted to just two. During the initial stages the call charges were exhorbitant. Every minute of local call cost around Rs.24/- for outgoing and Rs.18/- for incoming (I could be completely wrong with this figures - however, they are just figurative!).
The Local demand in market picked up as the cost of handsets and call charges slowly came down. And, as the costs came down, the demand went up and higher. It was a wonderful economic cycle that helped the uptrend of the Mobile technology in India. Today, the Mobile Telephone market in India is too big with more than 100 million subscribers. The total number of people who earn their bread through this Industry is huge (the Service providers, handset manufacturers, field installation folks, etc. Add to that the shopkeepers who do sell the recharge cards and the roadside vendors who sell those covers, key pads and all such simple things).

The first question....
(1) Was the mobile launched in India 20 years back...OR you were making a mention of the Telecom Policy of India - in general ?? I dont remember having seen any mobile before 90 and thought it could be relevant to ask you this question.....
The discussion is not about the "Mobile" phone alone. I looked to its root. It was Rajiv Gandhi who made Sam Pitorda to give up his job in USA and made him the Minister of Telecommunication in the late 80s. Rajiv Gandhi was the first PM of India who spoke about Computers and taking India towards 21st century, when most of us were worried about our day-to-day problems. There was NO foresight and vision given to the growth aspect, even at higher level of the organisation. Rajiv Gandhi was a gift to our Nation. He had a vision and that helped. IT and Telecommunication got its impetus and push during his period. Today, we are just reaping the fruits. (...Aana.. "Vidha".. naan pottadhu - remember the way Sivaji delivers this dialogue in "Thevar Magan"?).
Today, we in India, can boast of an excellent Telecommunication network - even better than Russia. My friend had been to Russia last year and said that he had to go to airport or to a far off place just to make an ISD call !! Can you believe that? I remember one of my uncles going to airport to make ISD calls - but that was in the 70s and early 80s !! The growth of IT and Telecommunication in India did not happen overnight. There was some well laid out plan and preparations done by people with vision. Rajiv Gandhi and Sam Pitorda were the chief architects of this growth and development. ** Travel - Pt II **
(Penned in Oct 07)
As said.. this is the second part of my musing on journey/travel. While in the first part I discussed the change in my behaviour pattern over a period of time as a traveller, in this part, I am gonna discuss about how others behave during the journey.
The big difference in the culture and attitude of the North Indians and South Indians is very obvious for anyone to see during journeys, where you get to meet them both, side by side. South Indians are always shy people and follow rules to a fair extent. At times their innocency touches the border of foolishness. Most of the South Indians prefer to sit exactly under their seat numbers and would like to have their luggage exactly under their seat (ass!). Panic and tension on their face would be quite obvious if they see some else occupying their space as they enter their compartment. North Indians think that the whole compartment is theirs' for taking. They always would come with more luggage and will occupy more space - most of the times encroaching upon others reserved area !! When there is a North Indian family and a South Indian family in a single coupey (8 seater) - its all the more fun to watch as they try to settle down.
Most interesting time is the phase when people enter the train and try to settle down in to their seats. It is at this point of time the compartments are crowded with more number of people than those actually travelling as those coming to see-off others too would be in the compartments trying to help (or disturb others!). People who walk quite a distance with heavy luggage, trying to reach their seats faster and settle down - all do make it interesting to watch. Most of the "fights" amongst the passengers starts at this stage.
Another big North South divide is the Kids/babies. North Indian kids/babies are mostly well behaved. South Indian kids/babies would be mostly shy and would take sometime to talk to others. North Indian parents wont force their children to recite poems and slokas in front of others... South Indian parents WILL do that ('slokas' will definitely be in the curriculum in case of Brahmins!). North Indian kids/babies wont cry to eat/sleep - infact, they would go for overkill. South Indian parents can be seen requesting, cajoling, threatening and walking behind their kids to make them eat.
Even the individual culture and flavour of different states can be seen. Bangaloreans will always come with a walkman or some modern gadgets plugged to their ears ! Bengalis are the "sound" parties; wont stop talking; fun is, everybody would be talking at the same time at the highest pitch of their voice and we wont know who is listening to who !! Gujaraties and Rajasthanis will always come with a big food baggage. North East folks will mostly be cheerful and will atleast have one music instrument with them.; their favourites are guitar and football); gender divide is not too big amongst NE people; its a commons sight to see girls very freely mixing with boys. As said.. this is the second part of my musing on journey/travel. While in the first part I discussed the change in my behaviour pattern over a period of time as a traveller, in this part, I am gonna discuss about how others behave during the journey.
The big difference in the culture and attitude of the North Indians and South Indians is very obvious for anyone to see during journeys, where you get to meet them both, side by side. South Indians are always shy people and follow rules to a fair extent. At times their innocency touches the border of foolishness. Most of the South Indians prefer to sit exactly under their seat numbers and would like to have their luggage exactly under their seat (ass!). Panic and tension on their face would be quite obvious if they see some else occupying their space as they enter their compartment. North Indians think that the whole compartment is theirs' for taking. They always would come with more luggage and will occupy more space - most of the times encroaching upon others reserved area !! When there is a North Indian family and a South Indian family in a single coupey (8 seater) - its all the more fun to watch as they try to settle down.
Most interesting time is the phase when people enter the train and try to settle down in to their seats. It is at this point of time the compartments are crowded with more number of people than those actually travelling as those coming to see-off others too would be in the compartments trying to help (or disturb others!). People who walk quite a distance with heavy luggage, trying to reach their seats faster and settle down - all do make it interesting to watch. Most of the "fights" amongst the passengers starts at this stage.
Another big North South divide is the Kids/babies. North Indian kids/babies are mostly well behaved. South Indian kids/babies would be mostly shy and would take sometime to talk to others. North Indian parents wont force their children to recite poems and slokas in front of others... South Indian parents WILL do that ('slokas' will definitely be in the curriculum in case of Brahmins!). North Indian kids/babies wont cry to eat/sleep - infact, they would go for overkill. South Indian parents can be seen requesting, cajoling, threatening and walking behind their kids to make them eat.
Even the individual culture and flavour of different states can be seen. Bangaloreans will always come with a walkman or some modern gadgets plugged to their ears ! Bengalis are the "sound" parties; wont stop talking; fun is, everybody would be talking at the same time at the highest pitch of their voice and we wont know who is listening to who !! Gujaraties and Rajasthanis will always come with a big food baggage. North East folks will mostly be cheerful and will atleast have one music instrument with them.; their favourites are guitar and football); gender divide is not too big amongst NE people; its a commons sight to see girls very freely mixing with boys. Rahul Dhravid has been dropped from the Indian One day team.
Yes - agreed that there are many young blokes knocking at the doors and as a means of providing opportunity to them, a few non performing players need to be dropped.
Yes, Dhravid was not giving the performance that we was expected from him during the recently concluded Australian series. But shouldn't the standard of the team that we played against be considered? We lost the serios 4-2 and how many players performed well in the series?
I am not for stopping from dropping players who dont perform. But, dropping a player of Dhravid's class based on just 5 games is not right !! Sachin and Dhravid are the two best players in terms of dedication, work ethics, class, standard, calibre and what not!! Well, even if Dhravid has to be dropped - there is a decent way that this issue could be handled with due respect to the commitment that Dhravid has shown to the Indian cricket so far. Its a shame to the BCCI and the selection committee to have handled Dhravid the way they have done now. But, afterall what matters.... people in the selection committee always get paid irrespective of the team's performance; they afterall discuss things in five star hotels on the revenue that was generated due to the efforts of classic players like Dhravid; and they are not the one who are on the ground to battle things out !! Tehelka has come out with another sting operation. This time on the Gujarat riot that happened in 2002. Many of VHP and RSS stalwarts have gone on record saying how the Muslims were massacred and how Modi turned a blind eye to all such happenings. Some have even quoted Modi as saying, "...all I can give is just three days and not more" !! The murderers explanation on how they went about killing muslims is chilling. Its difficult to become so cruel and heartless. There is no justification for the Godhara incident (Congress wants the world to believe that Godhra incident was not due to Muslim fanaticism!! Lucky people are sane, atleast a bit). At the same time there is no justification for the riots that followed Godhra. If it had been the extremists and terrorists who were killed in the riots, the world, would have been a bit more safer. Alas, that is always not to be - because the extremists always know what is coming and they know the knacks of the trade. They are the first one to seek safe havens as soon as any riots break out. Its always the innocent common man - irrespective of caste and creed - who get caught in the mele.

** Travel **
Reading one of my friend's musing on his journey experiences evoked some of my own experiences. I wish to write about two; .... about my own behaviour pattern and about how others behave during journey. The first of this series is about my own behaviour pattern.
Having travelled thousands of kilometers every year across the nation (had been part of my job) - I have had innumerable experiences. But more than the experiences - its the way (what I would call as "matured") - its the way I matured as a traveller that is of some interest (I think!).
Initially, when I joined a new job and when I was in my 20s - everytime I come(go) on(back after) leave, I always had a group of friends as company. We were a very cheerful lot, well behaved and always had many interesting things to discuss/debate. Co-passengers would soon become our friends. But, as years passed by, we probably realised that our behaviour was more external and not from within. We transformed from being very "vocal" travellers to "silent" travellers. During later stages - even while travelling with the same set of friends - our journey was more silent and we were more involved in observing and reading (and ofcourse sleeping, which is what I love the most while on train). Recently, I had an experience when I had travelled continuously for more than 35 hours and still did not utter a single word and yet had enjoyed every bit of my journey. I am not sure whether I attained this 'maturity' - because of age; because of lesser comapanions; or because I didnt have interesting co-passengers !!!
Whenever I used to read about English people being tight lipped (stiff upper lip!) - I think that it is not a handicap - but a better behaviour pattern. Instead of keeping us concentrated on our own words - it helps and allows us to "listen" to others !!
Nevertheless, I try to be careful in understanding the difference between "silence" and "sorrowness". Sometimes I have exprienced that "silence" leads me to some sick and negative thoughts (yes, not silent internally!) - during such occasions, I try to break silence and laugh out than getting into the depression mode.

** Narration **
I always hate the way 'Ananda Vikatan' (Tamil Magazine) or the magazines of its folk narrate a few incidents and paraphrase interviews. They give more value to sentiments and a few things that people prefer to read allowing values to vanish in thin air. So, when you read an article that treads a different path, you come out impressed.
I read an article written by "Urvashi Butalia" in Outlook. It was on Sanjay Dutt. He has been pronounced guilty and is now on parole. Nevertheless, that hasnt stopped him from rubbing shoulders from none other than PM, Sonia Gandhi and the Home Minister !! Commenting on that, the author wrote so in her last two paras....

** Centralisation **

The Noon meal scheme in TN is totally decentralised. In that, every school that implements the scheme are supplied with ration. Two are more people are employed, who, like teachers, come to school everyday in the morning - but their role, obviously, is to cook food and clean utensils.
Recently, I read article which speaks about the manner in which the same Noon meal scheme is being implemented in a few districts of AP. In AP, food is prepared in a centralised place and cooked food is being supplied to schools.
The advantages of centralised cooking is multifold. First of all - you need a Quality control agency in one single point - quality of both rations that come in and the prepared food that goes out can be monitored effectively and easily. Secondly, when it comes to providing a modern kitchen - its easy to provide modern facilities than providing it at thousands of schools. Also, the photo of the kitchen that was published in the magazine was atleast hundred times better than the cooking hall in TN schools that I have seen. Instead of distributing the ration, AP model goes about distributing the cooked food. There is a weekly menu card as per which food is cooked in AP schools (pulihora is the kids' favourite). Very importantly, in case of TN model, the ration that is being supplied - as you would expect - leaks out through every link that is involved., which is effectively stopped in the AP model.
Centralisation and Decentralisation has its own advantages and disadvantages. When both the AP & TN model are compared - I feel, the AP model is better than the TN model. Having said that, more than the model - it is the "effective implementation" that counts more than the model itself.

Magazine "Outlook" has completed 12 years. The 12th year annual issue had some interesting articles... in fact, they have put together 12 best articles, 12 best cartoons, etc, etc...
One of the interesting one....
A village in Rajasthan has been voted as the best Panchayat by the magazine and an article written about that village. A young lady (may be in her 40s) is the sarpanch of the village and its really astonishing to see what dynamic leadership can do (atleast as projected by the article). The collective efforts of the people too has been highlighted and the way the village panchayat has given importance to self sustainment, education, eco balance are something unheard of in any of our villages. The lady has a draft plan, says the magazine, that not even any of our metros have. The planned approach and the way she fights with the govt organisation in getting the plans implemented speaks volumes about her perseverance. Its good to read such positive articles about a village and about an individual.

** Lok Sabha Seminar **

Last week, I saw an excellent presentation in 'LokSabha' channel (yes, we have once such TV Channel !). I would rate the presentation as one amongst the best that I have ever come across.
It was given by P. Sainath, Rural Affairs Editor of The Hindu. (He got the Magsaysay award this year). And the audience were all MPs, which included Rahul Gandhi, Mani Shankar Iyer and a lot of famous personalities. Everyone was listening with rapt attention. (It seems regular such seminars are being arranged for the sake of improving MPs knowledge on various affairs).
P. Sainath spoke about the problems being faced by our (smaller) farmers and the reasons for the recent spate of suicides. It was a powerful presentation, presented with authority and with a lot of authenticated details. Sainath not only discussed the reasons for such a pathetic situation of our farmers but also did give various possible solutions for the problem.
A few questions raised by him really did made me to think. Banks are ready to lend you money in lakhs to help you buy a BMW car - but not even in thousands to farmers !! If repayment is what the Banks fear for, Sainath went on to quote the loan amount written off by Govt banks to big establishments. The biggest defaulters are rich people and not farmers. The huge money that the Govt has written off so far is for the filthy rich Industrial establishments and not for farmers.
I was impressed by his presentation and the manner in which our MPs were listening. Sainath was the only person who spoke - and everyone else were listening (another surprise, if you have ever witnessed our assembly sessions). If atleast one of them, just one of the huge audience, understands what was told and do go on to do something to stem the tide, it would be wonderful. Even if its going to be just the tip of the iceberg that would reach the farmers - it is ok. Something is better than nothing. It was really pathetic to hear the sufferings of the farmers - it is in far far worse state than we all imagine it to be.

Haneef
Dr Haneef, the Bangalorean, who was caught in Australia for his alleged involvement in the attempted Glasgow airport bombing has been freed. Australia could not muster enough evidence against him. The only proof they had was his sudden plan to leave Australia and was arrested at airport and he was the owner of the SIM card used by the terrorists who tried to blow away the airport.
Khafeel, Khafeel's brother and few other islam fundamentalists were involved in the Glasgow airport incident. Khafeel and another person drove the jeep laden with bombs into the airport. The bomb did not go off as expected and it was a botched attempt. In this, Khafeel was burnt and later died in hospital. No statement could be taken from him and so, many others will go scot free, including, possibly, Haneef.
Well, the worst part in all this is the importance given by Indian media to Haneef. All hue and cry was made over his arrest by the Australian police. PM himself went on record saying that he was pained and was not able to sleep on seeing Haneef's mother weep in TV. PM spoke to the UK PM and requested him not to single out any community in this episode.
What are we doing? Are we condemning terrorism? Or, are we supporting it? Do we have to adopt double standards, one for our country (Kashmir) and a different one for others?

After a loooong gap, I decided to revive my bloggers link and have started my blogging with this post on Sanjay Dutt, the hotly discussed topic this week....
Is sentencing Sanjay Dutt for 6 years right or wrong?
If law prohibits possession of Arms and ammunitions without license then that has to be followed. Are all the laws of the land being followed?.. Well, thats a good question. They are supposed to be followed and Sanjay Dutt did not follow and got caught. So, its not the question of breaking the law, but getting caught is what all matters... right? Do we have any other solution? To me, possession of illegal arms and ammunitions is a very dangerous thing. Sanjay Dutt did posses them. More than that, he had got those weapons from India's most wanted terrorist group... the Dawood gang. He had close links with those folks. Those who face the fire must bear the heat. In my view, even though Sanjay Dutt is, on date, a good character, he has been punished for doing something illegal and is sentenced for that. So nothing wrong in that.
