** Tamil Nadu (aka) Dharmashala **

It seems, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MK Karunanidhi has decided to take the State's financial status to the worst ever seen by any Indian State !! He keeps inventing new freebie schemes. Free TV, Free Land, Rice for Re.1 - those were his elections promises. He did not stop with that and is continuing this madness throughout his present tenure as Chief Minister. His latest is the Rs.2000/- as flood relief to the people of Tamil Nadu !! Those who did not even see a drop of water during the heavy rain last month are going to take the free gift of Rs.2000/- for nothing. Mr. Karunanidhi, did not stop his "tamasha" with that and his latest announcement is the biggest joke - "The government will distribute ingredients required to make 'sweet pongal' (chakarai pongal) for free to the people for the forthcoming 'Pongal' festival !! My God !!! When will all this madness stop ???

** Voting **

In India, even if just 50% of the people vote in general elections, it is considered as a very high voting percentage !! Isnt that a pity?? We need to find a way out of this mess. That, in my view, can be achieved if we make voting 'online' and make it possible for the people to vote through SMS!! It is not something that is impossible. Estonia has made 'online' voting possible way back in 2001 and is introducing voting through cell phones for their forthcoming Presidential elections. If the Estonians can - Why not India? With very high cell-phone penetration in India, the possibility of online/SMS voting should be taken up - atleast for a technical feasbility study. If we can operate our bank accounts (which is more precious than voting!) online - then, why not 'voting'?? If our voting system goes online, I am sure, we will see a higher percentage of voting, lesser queues at polling booths, choice of NRIs to vote .... the list of advantages keeps growing !!! Isnt that wonderful??

** Value of Life ? **

In the past few days, two suicide incidents (amongst many) attracted my notice. A school going girl committed suicide as her bicycle was stolen (the bicycle was issued under the "Free bicycle to students" scheme by the Govt). In another incident, a lady took her own life for she lost Rs.500/- that her husband gave to her for safe custody !! I was overwhelmed with pity and thought on how so little means so much to a lot of people.

** False propoganda on Hindu Terrorism **

The so called secularists of India have, at last, very eagerly pounced on a rare opportunity (Malegaon Blasts) and have gone on to meticulously brand it as "Hindu" Terrorism. I am of the view that this one mistake by one or two individuals should NOT be equated to the violence that the Muslim terrorists perpetrate across the whole world. Unfortunately, this is India and this sort of pseudo secularism is what most of the political parties in India thrive on, as it sells very easily and also gets votes. What else do these political parties want ??

Well, I read a nice piece of article on the subject - I am producing the same below.
-----------------------------------------------------------

The Hindu Rate Of Wrath
-By Francois Gautier

Is there such a thing as 'Hindu terrorism', as the arrest of Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur for the recent Malegaon blasts may tend to prove? Well, I guess I was asked to write this column because I am one of that rare breed of foreign correspondents-a lover of Hindus! A born Frenchman, Catholic-educated and non-Hindu, I do hope I'll be given some credit for my opinions, which are not the product of my parents' ideas, my education or my atavism, but garnered from 25 years of reporting in South Asia (for Le Journal de Geneve and Le Figaro). In the early 1980s, when I started freelancing in south India , doing photo features on kalaripayattu, the Ayyappa festival, or the Ayyanars, I slowly realised that the genius of this country lies in its Hindu ethos, in the true spirituality behind Hinduism. The average Hindu you meet in a million villages possesses this simple, innate spirituality and accepts your diversity, whether you are Christian or Muslim, Jain or Arab, French or Chinese. It is this Hinduness that makes the Indian Christian different from, say, a French Christian, or the Indian Muslim unlike a Saudi Muslim. I also learnt that Hindus not only believed that the divine could manifest itself at different times, under different names, using different scriptures (not to mention the wonderful avatar concept, the perfect answer to 21st century religious strife) but that they had also given refuge to persecuted minorities from across the world-Syrian Christians, Parsis, Jews, Armenians, and today, Tibetans. In 3,500 years of existence, Hindus have never militarily invaded another country, never tried to impose their religion on others by force or induced conversions. You cannot find anybody less fundamentalist than a Hindu in the world and it saddens me when I see the Indian and western press equating terrorist groups like SIMI, which blow up innocent civilians, with ordinary, angry Hindus who burn churches without killing anybody. We know also that most of these communal incidents often involve persons from the same groups-often Dalits and tribals-some of who have converted to Christianity and others not. However reprehensible the destruction of Babri Masjid, no Muslim was killed in the process; compare this to the 'vengeance' bombings of 1993 in Bombay , which wiped out hundreds of innocents, mostly Hindus. Yet the Babri Masjid destruction is often described by journalists as the more horrible act of the two. We also remember how Sharad Pawar, when he was chief minister of Maharashtra in 1993, lied about a bomb that was supposed to have gone off in a Muslim locality of Bombay . I have never been politically correct, but have always written what I have discovered while reporting. Let me then be straightforward about this so-called Hindu terror. Hindus, since the first Arab invasions, have been at the receiving end of terrorism, whether it was by Timur, who killed 1,00,000 Hindus in a single day in 1399, or by the Portuguese Inquisition which crucified Brahmins in Goa . Today, Hindus are still being targeted: there were one million Hindus in the Kashmir valley in 1900; only a few hundred remain, the rest having fled in terror. Blasts after blasts have killed hundreds of innocent Hindus all over India in the last four years. Hindus, the overwhelming majority community of this country, are being made fun of, are despised, are deprived of the most basic facilities for one of their most sacred pilgrimages in Amarnath while their government heavily sponsors the Haj. They see their brothers and sisters converted to Christianity through inducements and financial traps, see a harmless 84-year-old swami and a sadhvi brutally murdered. Their gods are blasphemed. So sometimes, enough is enough. At some point, after years or even centuries of submitting like sheep to slaughter, Hindus-whom the Mahatma once gently called cowards-erupt in uncontrolled fury. And it hurts badly. It happened in Gujarat . It happened in Jammu , then in Kandhamal, Mangalore, and Malegaon . It may happen again elsewhere. What should be understood is that this is a spontaneous revolution on the ground, by ordinary Hindus, without any planning from the political leadership. Therefore, the BJP, instead of acting embarrassed, should not disown those who choose other means to let their anguished voices be heard. There are about a billion Hindus, one in every six persons on this planet. They form one of the most successful, law-abiding and integrated communities in the world today. Can you call them terrorists?

** Sabari Malai **

I am just back from Sabari-Malai, Kerala. This is the second year in succession that I have been on pilgrimage to Sabari Malai (swimmig alongside an elephant was a wonderful experience this time :) ) . Kerala, no doubt, is definitely a wonderful place - but, from what I saw, the State - on the whole - is designed for thin population. Poor (or nil?) Industries has spared (?) most of the State of its old and natural beauty (Should we rejoice this aspect ?) Tourism and Ports are the life lines of Kerala - if we discount Agriculture.

Well, getting back to our topic - Sabari Malai - every year, the crowd keeps increasing. It would probably be a guiness record for the number of people who visit this temple in the short span of around 60 days in Nov-Dec-Jan every year. While excellent crowd management methodologies are in place - the place grossly lacks accommodation and other public facilities. With the temple's revenue generation running into crores - what stops the trustees/Govt from providing superior public facilities is one of the many clueless question that you face in India.

** A Wednesday **

"A Wednesday" - a must watch Hindi film !! Great story, wonderful narration, great picturisation, classic dialogues and some wonderful acting makes this movie a power packed one. Nasruddin Shah and Anupam Kher have played their role to perfection. This is an interesting and racy movie from start to end without any stupid song or dance sequence (that are part and parcel of Indian movies). The movie, "A Wednesday", at the end not just leaves you satisfied but also makes you to think. Don't miss it !!

** Mumbai - unanswered questions !! **

Finally, the Govt claims that the terrorists have been flushed out of the Taj, Oberai and the Nariman House. But there are quite a few unanswered questions....

a) Were there just 10 terrorists - as the Govt claims - who were involved in this whole terror act ?? How many managed to escape ??

b) Why is Shivraj Patil being allowed to continue as Home Minister despite his repeated failures as Home Minister?

c) It is well documented that Dawood has used the sea route during the 1993 Bombay attack. What has the Govt done, in the past 15 years - to plug that loop hole??

d) Leave aside the intelligence report about the attack from sea - does the Govt need such a report to be prepared for such an eventuality??

e) When will the Govt learn to treat terrorists as terrorists - than concentrating on the religion that they belong to ?

f) How long are we going to suffer the Govt's total ineptitudeness in handling terrorrism ??

g) Will the Govt now STOP discussing the oil pipe line from Iran through Pakistan??

** Mayhem in Mumbai **

I was too busy for the past few days and had to stay away from blogging. On getting back - the Mumbai Mayhem takes precedence than anything else. Just 10 men has managed to hold our nation on hook for more than two days - thanks to the training that the Pak's ISI gave (I have no doubt on that) and to the spineless Govt that India has at the centre !! At first, I wish to register my deepest condolences to all the departed souls.

While a few brave lost their lives fighting the terrorists - in the next few days, we will be able to see and hear quite a lot of people queuing up to stake claims for what all the departed did !! Victory has so many fathers !! At this time, if the Govt ever cares to act, it should take some stern measures against terrorism - than shelling out empty promises. But - the big question is - Is our present Government capable of that ??

** LTTE & 'POWER' Politics - DMK Strategy **

DMK and its chief Karunanidhi are always masters of cheap politics. The whole of Tamil Nadu is reeling under the worst power crisis. Urban areas face a minimum of two hours power failure and rural areas are without power for most part of the day & night. Industrial units are 'warned' not to take power from the grid during peak hours. What does the DMK Government do ? They took the 'Sri Lankan Tamil cause' !! Stage managed its MPs to submit their resignations to their chief, Karunanidhi (not to the Lok Sabha speaker!). The highly politicised film industry was instigated to organise a rally supporting the cause of Sri Lankan Tamilians. So, for the time being and for the n-th time, DMK has succeeded in the cheap diversionary tactics to gain political mileage. Given the situation - Power crisis - is going to haunt the DMK party in the forthcoming elections. But, again, by then, they will have another cheap tactics (as like the free TV campaign during the previous elections). You see, we never learn our lessons and curse ourselves by electing such cheap and mindless people to govern us.

** Sachin **

Sachin, is now the highest test runs scorer with 12,000 runs in his kitty. It took 19 years for Sachin to complete this stupendous feat. His mastery, sincerity and dedication reflects well in this achievement. But, above all - he has his head firmly on his shoulders and did not allow fame to get in to his head, The new gen kids who let their tongues wag after just one century should learn a lesson or two from Sachin on behaviour. Sachin, no doubt, is God's gift to Cricket and I consider myself lucky to have witnessed some of his wonderful innings. He has given so much joy to the huge fan followers of the game cricket. Sachin is a Legend and his records speaks volumes about the man's calibre. Kudos to Sachin on his 12000 runs feat !

** Poison Vs Poison **

Do you believe that a poison can be cured by another poison??  Well, the Indian Govt believes so !!  We all know that India has been the target of numerous terrorist activities - especially at a higher intense level in the recent past.   Home Minstry is the department that deals with internal terrorism.  Home ministry has a Minister (Shivraj Patil) and is assisted by three Minister of States in the present Congress Government.  One of the Minister of States for Home is Mrs. Radhika Selvi.

Here, we should know more about this person, Radhika Selvi.  She belongs to the party DMK - well, that is irrelevant to our subject.  What is more relevant is that she is the wife of Venkatesh Pannayar - who was a big time rowdy element (a Dawood Ibrahim of a smaller zone).  He was killed in a Police encounter in 2003.   Now, she is a Minister of State for Home Affairs of the Government of India.   Can you find a more suitable person for the portfolio ??  I suggest that we sack the present home minister and make the wife of Dawood Ibrahim as the Home Minister of India.  You see, a poison can be cured only by another poison !!  Don't you believe that ??  Well, our Govt does !! Jai Hind !!

** Honking & Indians **

Yesterday, I read an article on the honking habits of Indian drivers.  It went on to describe about the level of sound pollution and the rude behaviour of Indians (honking is considered rude in most of the other countries!!).

Probably the author of that article is not aware of the basic difference between honking in other countries and in India.  While in other countries they honk to seek 'right of way' -  in the crowded Indian roads - we honk for numerous reasons -

- to warn the person who jumps traffic signal and heads our way on the wrong side,
- to warn the pedestrian who jumps the road median to cross the road,
- to warn bicyclists from taking a casual stride across the road,
- to warn those animals that take a casual strode in the middle of the road,
- to warn the pedestrians who share the small strip of road along with plying vehicles,
- to warn the drivers who have obtained driving license by paying few bucks,
- to warn the person who may appear as a flash in front of you from numerous blind roads,
..... the list is endless.

In India, alteast in the 'so called' metro cities, it is impossible to drive without honking, especially during peak hours.  Those who talk about sound pollution and 'rude manners' should be punished to drive in Indian roads without honking for ten days (Just ten days!)  - without hitting any one or being hit by any one !!!  He he he....

Yes, I do honk !! ;)

** Birthday Gift **

On the occasion of his mentor and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister (Late) Anna Durai's Birthday, Karunanidhi - the present TN CM,  has ordered release of more than 1400 life convicts from prison (Those who know about Indian judicial system would vouch that life sentences are not handed over that easily in India and it involves years and years of trial process !).   Worst, the High Court did not stop this, despite an appeal filed to stop the release of prisoners.  The High Court in its ruling, stated that the prisoners can be released after obtaining a bond from them - the bond that is going to hold no value and at best can be used as toilet papers !!  The release of prisoners comes at a time when the State's crime graph is on the rise !!  I do not know what the real achievements of both Anna-Durai and Karunanidhi are, but can, without any doubt, say that Karunanidhi, in this tenure as CM of TN, has taken oath of destructing Tamil Nadu in every domain and sphere !!  Tamil Nadu will soon be the next Bihar of India !

PS :  The names of those to be released, it is said, also includes those who were convicted in Tha.Kirutenan's murder case.  Karunanidhi's son, Azagiri's hand was suspected in the murder case and it is said that all of Azhagiri's hench-men were involved in the murder of Kirutenan due to inner party feud/politics.   This is just what I read somewhere and I cannot authenticate on this claim.   But, Indian politics is capable of such things.

** Whats thrown up comes down **

When there were bomb blasts all over Gujarat, the congress Govt at the centre said that it had given advance warning and intelligence reports to the State Govt on the impending attack and wahsed off its hands of any responsibility stating the policing is under the State Govt's domain.  The idea of the congress Govt was to squarely blame the Gujarat Govt and put him in a fix - and they succeeded to a fair extent.    Later, Modi, Gujarat CM, immediately after the interrogation of one of the top suspects (whom the Gujarat Police arrested in UP) had met Prime Minister, Mr Manmohan Singh and had informed of Delhi being one of the next targets.  And that is what has happened exactly.  Delhi,  as a State is being looked after by the Delhi State Govt - and also, in the capacity of it being the Nation's capital is directly under Centre's Home Ministry -  both under the Congress regime !!  So what did they do with advance warnings ???

Well, arguments apart - it is very easy to place a bomb in any place in India.  With huge population and proportionately poor police strength, it is next to impossible to screen each and every one in importat market places, railway stations and other crowded places.  etc.   However, an analysis of ALL the bomb blasts in India will reveal "muslim" hands in every one of it  !!   While I will NOT blame the entire muslim community - there is no denying the fact that muslim fundamentalism is the root cause for all the blasts in India.  And the Congress Govt is hell bent upon pleasing the muslims and is NOT going to do anything about this "muslim" terrorism.  This Govt's attitude of soft pedalling on SIMI, the terror organisation that is stated to be behind all the bombings in the recent past,  speaks volumes about its capacity on controlling terror.   Also, as is being widely discussed, we do not have stringent laws to handle terrorists - courtesy the scrapping of POTA by this very same Congress Govt.  To add more fuel to fire, even those who are convicted are not executed beceause they happen to be muslims (Afzal Guru of the Parliament attack!!).

Another aspect of this situation is the faith of muslims over their religion.  They place religion above nation - and due to this aspect, muslim terrorists exploit the religious feelings of fellow muslims for its all its operations.  Accommodation and logistics to muslim terrorits are no big deal in any part of the nation - as all they have to do is to locate a muslim dominated area and a masjid.  Rest is a cake wake.  Integrity based on religious faith is only sowing seeds for diversion.  Such acts takes the muslim community far away from the national stream.  It is best that Muslim leaders realise this and start speaking to their people in a tone and meaning that is against terrorism.  The muslim schools, "madar shahs", should be brought under Govt scrutiny as it is these schools that happens to be the fountainhead of hatredness and religious fanaticism.  Muslim clerics should realise that it is regligious fanaticism that has forced terrorists to the extent of  placing a bomb near children's play area, which however was fortunately diffused.  This is time for introspection - both to the hapless and spineless Congress Govt and to the Muslim leaders.

Jai Hind.

** Sports & Chennai **

I was of the opinion that everything is available in a walkable distance in Valasaravakkam, Chennai - well, atleast till last week.  I came in for a rude shock when I went in search of a sports shop for buying a swim shorts.  Not just in Valasaravakkam, but in a huge radial, which includes some of the posh localities, I could not locate a single sports shop.   I was told that barring one street in Paris, Chennai and another one near Mount Road, there are hardly any sports shop in Chennai.   Surprised... aren't you ???

Well - it brings forth a few important aspects -

a)  The facilities available for a sports person in Chennai (India?).
b)  The level of Chennites interest in sports.
c)   If this is the state of affairs in a metro city, what about the rural areas?
and above all...
d)  I am gonna start swimming...  ;)

** Olympics 2008 **

China has definitely set an example by successfully organising the Olympics with very high standards. Organising an event of such huge magnitude calls for involvement from every sphere of the nation - and by conducting it successfully, China has proved its mettle, calibre and growth in every sphere. The inaugural and closing ceremony were simply fantastic. Facilities and resources left everyone astounding. Credit goes to China !! This only proves that "population" is NOT an impediment to growth. It is the 'discipline' that we Indians lack and which puts hurdle in the growth path of our nation.

** Sports & Facilities **

Indian wrestler, Sushil Kumar, who won the bronze medal for India in the just concluded Beijing Olympics made all the Sports ministry officials talk high. But, what is the ground reality?? One of the TV Channels showed the living condition of Sushil Kumar in Delhi, where he was staying and practicing. It was a small dingy hall will full of cots. Around ten were staying in that hall - where, not a single more could be accommodated. Cots were put next to each other without even one centimeter of space. A person living in a road side hut would have had more living space than that. Cant the sports ministry select atleast the top few and provide them better amenities?? All the three boxers who reached the quaterfinals and the wrestler have proven credentials even before the Olympics and yet the facilities provided to them were awful !! That speaks volumes of what the Sports Ministry does. Thats the exact reason that the value of the medals that these men have brought for India is worth more than what it appears. We will NEVER be able to up with China - not just in sports !!

** Kill and Walk Free **

RK Anand and IU Khan are two eminent High Court lawyers (one of them is an ex-MP). They were caught on camera influencing a witness to depose in favour of the prime accused in a sensational BMW hit-and-run case which resulted in the death of six. The witness is the main witness (sole?) for the whole case and if he back-tracks, the prime accused, son of a rich arms dealer Nanda, will walk free.

Well, now that the lawyers were caught obstructing the justice on camera, you would expect harsher punishment. No, NOT in INDIA !! All they got was a four months suspension from appearing in court and a fine of Rs.2000/- (those lawyers servants may be getting more than that as monthly salary!). This only sets a wonderful trend where anyone can obstruct justice and all they get is a mild punishment, if at all they were caught.

** J & K **

The State is in a turmoil since the past few days. I do not agree with the view of lot of so-called "elites" who keep writing that Kashmir should be given "aazaadi" (yes, in Indian news-papers!!). The present situation is entirely due to the stupid act of the Congress government - both at the Centre and at the State. It does not have any resolution in hand to solve the tangle - and that has added fuel to the fire. The present situation is quite dis-heartening and painful and I am watching the horizon with a grave concern.

** விகடனும் LTTE-இம் **

In the latest edition of Vikatan - it has published a survey on LTTE and Tamil Nadu. The survey was done amongst a total of 4195 people and has been published as if that is the overall views of people of Tamil Nadu. A magazine of the stature of Vikatan could have acted more responsibly. The following are some of the "findings" of the survey :-

a) Support LTTE - always :54.25%
b) Tamil Eelam - Yes, needed:55.44%
c) India Should involve in the SL problem - YES:62.59%
d) LTTEs growth in the warfare - Proud of it:46.24%

Icing on the cake :
ராஜீவ் காந்தி படு கொலையில் குற்றம் சாட்டப்பட்ட பிரபாகரன் -
கைது செய்யப் பட வேண்டும்:43.02%
மன்னித்து விட்டு விடலாம்:40.07%
குற்றம் அற்றவர் : 16.90%

So, will these people say the same if equated with Kashmir?? Isnt it the same scenario. Tamil people in SL for Kashmir people; LTTE for Kashmir terrorists; Sri Lanka for India; and India for Pakistan !!!

This is an example of how insane can people get to and how irresponsible can a magazine be !!
Jai Hind!!

** Abortion Law - Pt II **

Exactly on the same day I made my previous posting on the plight of a couple who had filed a suit seeking permission to abort a 25 weeks foetus - court has given its ruling that they CAN NOT !! Per the ruling, since the 25 weeks foetus starts breathing, it becomes alive and hence cannot be terminated. Law has no provision for 'euthanasia' in Indian constitution. Now, the couple can do nothing but to pray God.
---------------
A couple in Mumbai has filed a case in court seeking legal permission to abort the 25 week foetus as medical/scan reports suggests that the unborn child has heart blockages. In India, the country’s abortion law does not allow termination of pregnancy beyond 20 weeks unless it harms mother’s life/health. Aborting a 25 weeks foetus, is by itself a threat to the mother - and now, the court is going to take a few more days to decide. Adding to the chaos, Mumbai's Archbishop has given a religious colour to the case by appealing to the couple to allow the child to be born and the church will take care of the child. So many questions go begging - about our abortion laws; on why cant the church take care of lakhs of children getting treated for various diseases in India? - But what is clear from all these happenings is - if you decide to seek a solution to any of your problem, do NOT seek legal assistance in India !! Jai Hind !!

** Sports & Grit **

Natalie Du Toit & Oscar Pistorius are no ordinary sports persons. Both are physically challenged. Natalie, a swimmer with only one leg and Oscar a sprinter with no legs at all! While Natalie has qualified for the Olympics, Oscar failed to qualify. Oscar fought a prolonged legal battle to allow him participate in the Olympics to compete alongside other able bodied sportsmen; it was opposed on the grounds that artificial legs gave him an advantange over fellow men; Oscar ultimately won the case but failed to qualify in the Olympic qualifying rounds. However, Natalie's is a success story. She says her memorable experience was in one of the Common Wealth games that she participated, where, when she turned around to take the last 50 m lap, all other swimmers had already finished the whole distance, but the whole stadium stood up and cheered for her. In this Olympics, no doubt, I will be cheering for Natalie.

** Bomb Blasts **

Today (25 Jul 08), there were as many as 7 bomb blasts in Bangalore, India. On the first account, hands of LeT and SIMI are suspected. All the bomb blasts that happened today are of low intensity - nevertheless, reminds us of the harsh reality of the threats that our nation faces. Politicians are busy saving their chairs and police folks are even busier, pleasing their bosses. America invades nations when terrorists attack them; Israel bombs them; India - well, we are the preachers of peace - we release terrorists from prisons !!

** Beach Volley Ball **

The glamorous game, Beach Volley Ball championship was successfully conducted in Elliot's beach, Chennai. All the newspapers, in the name of news, gave huge publicity to the event by publishing sexy photos - some, even above the Headlines (Head Photo!!) - on the first page !! I was only surprised that the event was conducted, as planned, without any resistance from the so called 'moral policers' !! Well, if it interests you, the Indian girls team skipped playing in bikinis and wore the normal sports wear (shorts and T-shirts). ;)

** Yarchagumba **

No, its not the name of a Rishi !! Its the name of a fungus that grows on a caterpillar and is found in Himalayan states. Whats the speciality?? Its a performance enhancer !! Importantly, Chinese know about this. The secret to spate of medals by Chinese in the previous episode of olympics is attributed to this. With Olympics approaching, Yarchagumba is again in demand. Can u guess what the cost would be...... imagine as high as you can..... well, I am sure your guess must have fallen short by a huge margin... earlier, it is said, that it did cost around Rs 4 to 5 lakh per kg and with the olympics approaching, now, its somewhere around Rs 7 to 10 lakh per Kg !! Nevertheless, I continue to subscribe !!

** Democracy at its best **

Members of Parliament, who have been convicted by the courts and jailed for murders/looting/kidnapping/etc will now decide the fate of our Government. Tough bargaining (money deals / ministerial posts) have already started (or finished?) !! When persons like the cunning Dewa Gowda says that he is still undecided, its anyone's guess on what would make him decide to vote in Govt's favour. So is the case with every MP who decides to 'support the Nuclear deal' and 'vote in favour of the Govt' !! We, the citizens of this Nation, have matured and seen enough to belive and understand the 'principles' of our 'dirty politics' !! Manmohan Singh should better resign before the confidence vote than accepting to every demand of rogue MPs and Dewa Gowdas.

** Tirupathi **

Yesterday (14 Jul 08), I went to Tirupathi for the first time (not counting the one when my father carried me to the temple when I was a baby)!! I walked from 'Tirupathi' (Kheezh Tirupathi) to the Temple ('Thirumala'). I walked for 3 hrs non-stop, climbing the hill and across the stretch, which is about 11 kms in total. Since it was a sudden plan, I had not booked my tickets - both for the journey and for the 'darshan'. There are too many buses to Tirupathi from Chennai and the journey was comfortable and the 'Padha Yatra' was good too. We had to go through the 'free darshan' Q and I had to wait for - believe me - five and half hours for the one minute darshan of 'Perumal'. Here, I have to appreciate the wonderful arrangements that Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam (TTD) had made for the devotees. The long wait period was not difficult at all. We were accommodated in well laid out cells - which is being opened on 'first occupied first open' basis. The 'cells' have huge plasma TVs where the tamil version of Mahabaratha is being screened all the time (good that we dont have the telugu version yet!). The only area where the TTD can improve upon is in displaying 'better and organised' display/sign boards. There are quite a lot of such boards - but, for a first timer, you have to keep enquiring people about the way, procedure etc (there are 'information centres' though). But since I prefer to find my way without having to ask anyone - I found the facility inadequate. With lakhs of devotees thronging the temple every day, that sure is one area that TTD should need to take care of - both at the Tirupath and at the Thirumala (the terms used to locals to refer to, what we call, as Keezh Tirupathi and the temple on the hill respectively).

** Best Airports **

See the links below to know about the best rated airports...

Airports in Asia are at the top of the list. Hey.. are you looking for any Indian Airports?? Most of our 'modern' airports are under construction and wait till that is completed (he..he..he.. as like any Govt projects, it will never get completed and you can proudly keep boasting about the 'about to be best' Indian airports!

** SHAME !! **

The dust over the bomb blast in Indian Embassy in Kabul has settled. Four Indian lives were lost. I am not going to dwell into the 'Militancy' or the 'Politics' angle of this gory episode - but even more worse than that - our attitude in discriminating the dead - our own people. Amongst those four, most of us would remember two names - Mr Mehta and Mr Rao. Do, any of us, remember the names of other two individuals?? Most probably, we won't - because they were lower level soldiers and not 'Officers'. Their lives, after all, are not as worthy as those two 'Officers'. The names of those two soliders were not widely published or telecast. All the media (newspapers and TV channels included) flashed photos of those officers, their grieving family and everything related to them - but, did we hear anything about those soldiers?? I didnt. NOT A WORD !!! The were just 'two ITBP jawans' - nothing else. All the four of them were serving the role that our Nation wanted them to - then, why this discrimination?? This is not the first instance that such an episode is being enacted and not going to be the last too. Everyday, when we hear about our dead soldiers in J&K or anywhere else, due to whatever reason that may be, we always read it as " Major X, Captain Y and two 'jawans' ". Lower level soldiers are not even worth in being mentioned with their names. I dont blame the media - because that is how the PRO of the respective defence forces circulate the news. After all, "soldeirs" are cheaper commodity and are expendable.

** Indo-US Nuclear Deal **

I came across some very interesting stats about our Nuclear energy, budget allocation and some sinister plots. Read on.....

India generates a total of 1,26,839 MW electricity. Out of which, 66% is from Thermal, 26% by Hydro, 5% from Solar & Wind mills and 3% from Nuclear resources.

Govt spends about Rs.600 Crore for Solar & Wind mills (which produces 5% of our electrical energy). While, the expenditure is Rs 3,897 crore towards Nuclear plants which just meets 3% of our energy requirements. Even if the Govt spends the envisaged Rs 90,000 crore in the next 25 years, it would just meet 9% of our electrical energy requirement.

Well, I am not arguing against the Nuclear deal - but those do oppose, do have a point! Right??? Atleast the Govt provided statistics above may make it look so. But, yes, the 'Nuclear Weapon' aspect is not included in the above expenditure/benefit stats. Having said that, we also should accept that the 'waste disposal' and the 'high risk & aspects' are always a big pain when it comes to Nuclear plants.

There is another very interesting point that those who oppose the deal put forward - India is very rich in Thorium resources. India has the world's second largest Thorium resources (3 lakh tonnes), after only to Australia. At the present availability projections, it is possible to produce 35 Lakh MW of electricity from Thorium. We have the where-withal and technology to produce eletricity from Thorium. We only have to put the technology to practice to extract electricity from Thorium. If India goes ahead and implements the 'Electricity from Thorium' technology, say in next 25 or 35 years, we would ultimately become an electricity surplus nation. The present Nuclear deal, as plotted by the Americans, it is said, is to STOP India's indigineous growth.

Well... I am not a Nuclear scientist - but have only given some stats that I have read here and there.

** Indian Political Twists **

Two important political events in the last few days worth metion in this blog. Left withdraws support to the Congress Govt at the centre and here in Tamil Nadu, PMK has been thrown out of the coalition by the DMK regime. Both the Left and the PMK were a big pain to the Central and State Govts respectively. They did not allow the 'rulers' to have their way - be it some 'worthy/ambitious' plan or in 'corruption' as well. They were acting as a sort of safety valve in not letting anything get beyond what they thought as 'optimum' standard. But, people are not worried at all about the developments - Does that say something - both about the people and about the Government ??

** Oil Scarcity **

Petrol and Diesel getting rationed was not expected so soon, atleast I did not expect this to happen so soon. Long queues and the 'no stock' boards have been a common feature in the past one or two days in petrol bunks across Chennai and many other cities in India. I fear that this may become an order of the day. One more place where we have to stand in endless queue; one more chaos added to our already chaotic life. On one side, this huge population is what that inspired our economic growth and on the other side, as a common man in this hugely populated country, I have to be in long queues for everything - right from birth to death !! Hospitals, banks, courts, hotels - the long list is endless. Queue, Queue - everywhere !!

** Amarnath Land row **

Amarnath Land row, as like all other issues in India, has taken political colours - leaving it with NO possibility of a solution. J&K Govt allotted a few acres of forest land in the Amarnath pathway (Amarnath is a holy Hindu shrine situated in the Himalayas) to the 'Amarnath Shrine Board'. Plan was to develop some structures to facilitate easy movement and better security cover for the thousands of pilgrims who visit Amarnath every year. What looks as an innocuous deal has erupted into a volcano. Kashmiri Muslims do not want permanent structures in Kashmir for the 'Hindu' cause !! The J&K Cong government has become a minority as the coalition parner PDP withdrew support. Lot of lives have already been lost. The battle still rages on. Due to the pressure from Muslims and from the politicians supporting muslims, the transfer of land to Amarnath Shrine Board has been revoked. My doubt is, will the present Govt, both at the Centre and at the State, take the same stand had only the Amarnath been a Muslim shrine and the agitators were Hindus ??? The answer to this simple question will make you understand all about Indian politics. Jai Hind.

** Election and Freebies **

Following the style of our octogenarian Karunanidhi, Congress(I) too announced too many free sops for people in Karnataka if they were voted to . Fortunately, they got defeated. I wish that this puts an end to the most absurd practice that the 'Tamilian' community had given to the world. Before his tenure ends, Karunanidhi, is sure to take the TN economy position well into the red. Its just not too far away for us to witness.

** OIL **

Hike in the cost of pertrol/diesel/LPG cylinders is inevitable. All the political parties know this and yet they are calling for agitation and 'bundh' - This is a perfect example of 'opportunism'. Now we have this new trend of every party calling for a "bundh' on different days - like we had in Kolkatta, which resulted in 'bundh' on two successive days !!! Politicians are raking up the emotions of public only to garner cheap publicity and that too at the cost of people's sufferings.

** Gujjars **

The Gujjar community in Rajasthan has been fighting against the Govt seeking reservation for their community. The agitation been happening going on for a while. Few lives have been lost, rail and road traffic have been blocked. Gujjars are fighting it tooth and nail. All these started because of the 'stupid' election promise made by the BJP. This time, Gujjar community took the election promise very seriously and are asking for what they have been promised for (how silly of them!) ! Atleast now, all the parties should learn on from the folly of BJP. But that is not going to happen. After all, this is India and cheap politics is a very commonly available commodity. If the Govt is going to concede to the demands of Gujjars, many more such castes/groups are going to line up seeking quota for them under the SC/ST or a special quota !! However, all these things are only is going to leave the most deserving without any benefits. But allowing the most deserving to benefit is the last in the minds of our politicians - havent we learnt this the hard way?? All these happenings only goes on to show that the biggest threat to India is not from Pakistan or China - its from our own 'stupid' politicians!!! Jai Hind !!

** Nepal **

The Communists are all set to take charge of governing Nepal. Well, after such a prolonged fight - dont they deserve that? Haven't people voted them to rule them? Cant the communists give a stable government to the hapless people of Nepal?? Well, first of all, communists have not got an absolute majority through ballot. They need support to form a Govt. And there has been lot of bullying tactics by the maoists during the elections. And thirdly, the 'maoists' had caught the imagination of peoply by acting as 'Robin Crusoes' - robbing rich and paying the poor. And this is the very fundamental classification that make them unfit to rule a country.

Nepal, henceforth, is going to hold the 'China' card in front of us - and thus is going to be a big 'pain in the ass' for India. Nepal is going to become the breeding ground for terrorists (the present day legislators were groomed on these grounds and they would not mind much). Nepal is going to serve as a main channel for all sorts of unwanted elements (both men and material) to gain access into India !! When the decision making is going to be in the hands of legislators, who where terrorists till a few days ago, India is in a tough situation. As usual, the Indian (Congress) Govt, till date, have not taken a strong stand on the Nepal issue - because of the fear of 'China'. To put the whole complex issue in simple terms, Nepal - for India, is just another Pakistan in the making.
Well, without seeing Nepal through an 'Indian' glasses - Will the coalition Govt in Nepal help its prosperity and growth? Doesnt India survive and grow with coalition Govts?? The difference between India and Nepal is - India had a very stable Govt and great leaders during its formative stage. Nepal does not. And we are only witnessing the steady 'destruction' of India - because of coalitions governments. A coalition Govt - importantly, a coalition Govt with Communists at the helm - is always going to be trouble some. We can only wish that Nepal goes on to prosper under the communists regime.

** IPL **

IPL - T20 cricket, for the past one month, had taken most of my time (no... no regrets). I was wathching almost all the matches with lot of interest. I am of the view that the abridged version is going to be the future of cricket. 'Rajasthan Royals' - under the leadership of Shane Warne won the tournament and they were the team that deserved victory the most - based on its performance right from the beginning of the tournament. Chennai, the runner-up was not even fit to get into the semis and sheer luck had carried them to the finals - thankfully, they did not win the tournament. Atleast now the euphoria surrounding Dhoni should subside - lets see. He was the costliest player of the tournament and just was only an average performer. It would be interesting to see on how the players will be rated for the next years episode. For now - IPL is over and I am back to blogging.. :)

** A contrast comparison **

ISRO placed all the 10 satellites, in a single launch, successfully in the orbit. The previous record was 8 satellites in one launch and that was done before two years by Russia. ISRO is a huge success story and it makes us all feel proud of it. In my view, the success of ISRO should be attributed to its setup in that it is away from the clutches of the Govt and is a sort of independent body (though not totally independent). When we look at a few organisations, which are more under the Govt - the result is more appalling. DRDO - the lesser we talk about it, the better !! Lets take the latest news on the Arjun Battle tank to substantiate the reasoning. 35 years after the project was approved, we still have five major defects. From the original project cost of Rs 15.5 crore, we, so far, have spent 305.6 crore !!

Army has said that the tank suffers from low accuracy and consistency, chipping of gun barrels, shearing of top rollers and failure of hydro pneumatic units (data from "The Hindu"). Our Defence Minister states, "The rectification of defects and performance of tanks are being closely monitored". How long?? Army states that the tank has low accuracy - which means, for eg, if Mambalam is targetted we would end up firing at Tambaram !!

** New Invention !! **

"Rise in global prices of food grains is because the Indian middle class has attained a level of prosperity and they have started consuming more resulting in the world wide shortage of foodgrains." ....... After great research work, Mr. Bush, who incidentally happens to be the President of USA, has found out this reasoning. I recommend that he be given this year's Nobel Prize for Economics !!

** Nepal **

Monarchy in Nepal is gone and the Maoists are in !! Down the line, say after a few years of Maoists rule, I see China coming in with all its might into Nepal. The Himalayas is no more going to be a border for India in North !! Islamic terrorism is going to get deeply rooted in Nepal !! The present Indian Govt may applaud the present "victory of democracy" in Nepal - but, I strongly feel that we are going to pay a heavy price for this !! Now, India has too many huge windows open along its border - Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh... !! Thank God, we have oceans on the other three sides !!

** Iran - Pak - India Gas pipeline **

One thing that I like about the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is that they were careful when handling with issues relating to Pakistan. When it comes to the Congress (I) Party, they always want to show that they are more "secular" in their behaviour and they think that their actions against Pakistan would be seen as anti-muslim and hence would undermine their Indian Muslim vote bank. What else do you call the Petroleum Minister, Mr. Deorah's statement that India would go ahead and sign the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project in the next two or three months ?? The Congress Govt has not learnt its lessons from the past 60 years behaviour of Pakistan. Nor is the Congress Govt looking at the present. If so, it would have seen the anarchy that is prevailing in the border areas of Pakistan where the pro-Islamist groups have taken the reigns and wield better control. All the Congress government doing is handing over the advantage to Pakistan and thus to the Islamic terrorists and is also dropping its pants down allowing Pak to rape it and thus our nation, India.

** Governance - Congress Style **

In Canada, a huge procession was taken by Sikhs supporting and glorifying Indira Gandhi's assassins. Indian Intelligence bureau has warned the Punjab Govt that the Khalistan movement is on the rise (Fanatic, but more prominent Punjab political groups are supporting it - calling it as people's movement). Former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir Mufti Mohammed Syed has said that the use of Pakistan currency should be allowed in Jammu & Kashmir. As a true citizen, you would believe that Government would against all such prominent and disturbing happenings !! Unfortunately this is India and the ruling party is Congress .... nothing of any sort, in the name of action is seen - atleast till now.

** Tamil New Year's Day **

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr Karunanidhi has passed a resolution changing the Tamil New Year's day from April/14 to Jan/14 !! Given the sort of politician that Karunanidhi is, this is not a big surprise. This change of New year is nothing but another gimmick that Mr Karunanidhi has pulled out of his hat. What has he achieved by it?? He has proved that his so called "secularism" is nothing but fiddling with Hinduism. I can challenge him and the folks of his ilk that all they can do in the name of "secularism" is to 'finger' Hinduism - for, they do not dare to touch Christianity and Islam. Because, people of those religion are better bonded when it comes to the question of religion. Almost everyone has kept quiet on this issue of changing the Tamil New Year, because, Karunanidhi was clever enough to label his resolution as "pro-tamil". If you speak against the stupidity of this exercise, you would be branded "anti tamil". No one will dare to say that the King is walking naked !! I only wish that everyone start looking into such cheap tactics - than consoling ourself that all such historical changes were first met with some stiff resistance and will, over a period of time, be accepted by people. [ Here, I also see a behaviour pattern of certain set of people. Pervez Mushraff has to be more aggressive - or rather, visibly more aggresive, against India, because he has to prove to the people of Pakistan that though his birth place is India, he is a true Pakistani. Actor Kamal Haasan has to be more (visibly) aggresive against "God" and has the need to support EVR Periyar - because, he has to prove that though he is born as a Brahmin, he should not be seen as one. Over a period of time, it is the role that they attire than the originality that takes prominence. Do you now see the reason as to why a lot of Brahmins have kept quiet - or even have supported this issue ? ]

** Reservation- More on Quota **

Supreme Court in its decision favouring 27% quota for Other Backward Class (OBC) people, has said that the quota system should be reviewd after five years. After five years, Review, they will - to see whether the quota need to be increased further and not to decrease it !! I dont think I will ever get to see the quota system being removed in my life time ! Basically, more than the upliftment of Backward class, this quota arragement is more about Politics. Supreme Court has played to the tune of Politicians and has helped pave way for faster degradation of premier institutes like IITs and IIMs - and India as the nation on the whole !! Jai Hind !!

** Times of India **

Times of India (ToI) has started its Chennai edition from today (Apr/14/2008). ToI is the sort of newspaper which gives 'what people wants' - a lot of sex & glamour !! They also do sell it at a cheaper rate - aggressive marketing !! I would not consider ToI as a threat to "The Hindu". But lesser mortals like, "The Deccan Chronicle" and "The Indian Express" may slowly fade away from the arena; or at best, they also would switch to the "style" of ToI. If you wish to read lot of tit-bits, masaala news, glamorous news and wish to see some sexy photographs in glossy sheets, goahead and subscribe to ToI - but in the least, subscribe to ToI as an additional newspaper for your home, not the sole one !!

** Kathipara Overbridge **

After a pro-looonged delay, construction of a part of Kathipara overbridge in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India was completed and opened to traffic on Apr/09 ! Some relief to the choking traffic at this junction. When this bridge is totally completed and also when the overbridge near the airport is completed, traffic from Tambaram to Anna-Flyover will ease to a greater extent. Hope we will get to see that soon.

** Hogenekal Project **

The dust has settled down a bit as the Tamil Nadu Govt has decided to put the Hogenekal drinking water project on hold. This project was envisaged to supply drinking water to the people of Krishnagiri and Dharmapur district. This project was earlier worked out on a sort of 'barter' arrangement. Way back in 1998, Tamil Nadu Govt gave a clearance to the 'Bangalore Drinking water scheme' to use the Cauvery water, for which in return, Karnataka Govt, gave a clearance to this 'Hogenekal Project'. The fluoride level in water, in the districts of Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri is at 9.0 mg/L (against the WHO norm of 1.5mg/L). The Hogenekal project would have benefitted both these districts - or around 2.2 million people (most of them, according to one estimate, are Kannada and Telugu speaking people).

Though we have the previous clearance... why the storm now??? "ELECTION" - is the magic word !! While there is certain amount of truth in Jayalalitha's accusation that Karunanidhi has given up to Karnataka - we need to realise that, at this stage where elections are round the corner in Karnataka, going ahead with this project would only have made every political party in Karnataka fight tooth and nail against the project. Afterall the politicians care for nothing but for votes. Worst of all are the statements from one of our former (unfortunate) PM - Shri Dewa Gowda !!!

God, save this Nation from Politicians !!

** Vellore Golden Temple **

I have seen quite a few beautiful places in India. On Tuesday, after my visit to the 'Golden Temple' built in Vellore, Tamil Nadu (India), I would, without any hesitation, rank it as the best that I have ever seen so far. Its simply breath taking, even better than the Lotus temple and Amritsar Golden Temple. The pathway that takes you to the central main temple is designed in a star shape and the landscape on both sides of this pathway is breath taking and well maintained. Let me not waste too many words - dont forget to get this place on your 'must see' Indian site. To enjoy your trip, plan it on any of the week days and during early morning hours when the place is not crowded.

** Sixth Pay Commission & Defence **

The Sixth pay commission has submitted its recommendations on the revised pay scales for Central Govt employees to the Govt. It is expected that the recommendations are going to be implemented without any major changes.

Last time, after the pay commission recommendations were implemented, there was a huge turmoil in Indian Air Force. The disparity in pay was the bone of contention. Not the disparity in pay between Men and Officers - but amongst Officers themselves and that is what led to the agitation. [ Men, without the support of Officers, in Services, can never do a minor protest, leave alone a huge agitation ].

Whats going to happen this time??? I am not an expert nor have I gone through the whole set of recommendations - but, from what I have seen, let me just quote one recommendation that is about to be implemented. For those serving in difficult areas - there is an allowance. Men would get around Rs.1000 and Officers would get around Rs.6000/- !! So - is the terrain more difficult for the Officers than for Men?? Are the climatic conditions more harmful for Officers than for Men?? When it comes to a posting in difficult terrain, Officers get the best of everything - and still get paid with higher allowances !!

Officers are employed based on higher education qualification, but what has that got to do with the allowances such as that meant for difficult terrain ??? Everytime, a new pay commission submits its recommendations, the Officers get the flesh while the Men are left to be content with bone pieces (because, its the officers who forward the recommendations to the panel !!)

I am reminded of a Service Slogan ..."The safety, honour and welfare of your country comes first, always and every time. The honour, welfare and comfort of the men you command, come next. Your own ease, comfort and safety comes last, always and every time."

This, like so many other slogans, remains just as a slogan and nothing else. Practically, it is "Self first, Self Next and Self last !!!"

Jai Hind !!!

** Art !! **

French President Sarkozy's wife's nude photo, shot way back in 1993, is about to be auctioned !! The auctioning house has said that it is bringing the photo under hammer only because Bruni (First Lady) is a beautiful lady and the photograph is an art. Well - why did no one identify the "art" till she became the first lady !! You can give one thousand explanations to justify the means to earn money !!

** ICL Vs IPL **

Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) runs the IPL and the rebel ICL is being run by the Zee group. Though the ICL started first and there are many international players of repute - BCCI has played strong arm tactics and has managed in getting the ICC, the world governing body not to recognize the ICL group. Also, the BCCI has flexed its muscles and has got all the countries to impose restrictions on players from playing for ICL.

The worst act of the BCCI is yet to come - now, it has decided to ban all the youngsters playing cricket for ICL from playing cricket in all leagues, divisions, colleges, universities, etc. This would be the most atrocious act. I am not able to understand as to why the Govt is remaining as a mute witness to all these bullying tactics !! Is it because one of its own ministers is the Chairman of the BCCI?? Well, why is no one going to court under the "Monopoly Restrictive Trade Practices"-Act ???

** A Good Question **

"When Dr Haneef was arrested for his links with terrorists by the Australian police - our Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh said that he was not able to sleep. So, why is our Prime Minister not losing his sleep when Sarabjit Singh is languishing in Pakistan Jail and is facing the death sentence??" - that was a nice question posed by one of the BJP MP to the PM in the Lok Sabha !! A nice question !!

** STOP THIS **

The second drama, within a week, was enacted with great fanfare. This time, it was for the victorious senior Indian cricket team that arrived from Australia. Felicitations in a huge stadium thronged by thousands of people, attended by ministers and many biggies, cash awards running into lakhs and crores..... When will all these stupid acts stop ?

Indian cricket team really played well and defeated the world champions - there is no denying that... but, why go overboard with all these ceremonies?? Worst factor is, many of the players were averse to such ceremony. But, these days, everything is being looked upon as an opportunity to hog the limelight, especially by the politicians and the "chamchas" who are always on the lookout for opportunities to please politicians. The media plays a big role in this annoying drama - dishing out interviews after interviews to fill in their air time. It doesn't really matter even if you are a servant, mopping Sachin's hotel room - your interview becomes important. Why can't the media be more responsible??

** CT Scans & Cancer **

Research works on the effect of CT Scan over humans have time again proved that the risk of cancer is high in case of adults and is too high in case of children. Specialists recommend that the amount of radiation should be minimized in case of kids; should only scan when necessary; should scan only the indicated region; scan only once and a big NO for multi phased scanning.

With the mushrooming of CT Scan centres being run as business units in India, do we have any rules and regulations in place for subjecting people to CT scans? For most of the ailments, CT Scan has become the next logical step (Doctors go the extent of insisting that you take the Scan in X or Y Scan Centre - as they too get a 'cut' !!). It is being said the those who are not aware of the CT Protocol Guidance should not carry out CT examinations. But in India, the only protocol that works well is the "Profit Oriented Business Protocol" - nothing else. That also reminds me of the Doctor and Pharmacists nexus in India - let me take up that later.

For now, please do know about the risks of CT Scans. In case of any of your friends or relatives need to go for CT Scans, especially the kids, please make them aware of the risks and their right to ask for minimum radiation - scan only the essential parts etc that the specialists suggest.

** Kashmir Singh **

Kashmir Singh has spent 35 years in Pakistan prison on charges of spying. Finally one good man, who happened to be in the right position, saw his plight and took it up with Mushraaf during one of his good moods and the result is freedom for Kashmir Singh after 35 years in Pak prison. Lucky this man, Kashmir Singh is - because, there are quite a few who might have breathed their last in Pak prisons, especially quite a few Indian soldiers who became PoWs during the Indo-Pak War. For a person who remained in Pak prison for 35 years, this man really looked hale and healthy. Thats the "Punjabi Strength" for you !! :)

** Chidambaram Episode **

One Mr. Samy wanted to recite Thevaram and Thiruvasagam at Thiruchitrambalam, situated just in front of the sanctum sanctorum. He, with the permission of HR&CE (Govt Dept) went to the temple. The Dikshithars, who are administering the affairs of the temple protested this move and stopped Samy from entering the sanctum sanctorum.

This is the gist of the whole dirty incident that happened on Apr/30 at Chidambaram Natrajar temple. Mr. Samy could have gone to the temple without a big group of people behind him. The Dikshithars could have allowed Mr Samy. But neither happened and this issue, as like so many other, has been highly politicised.

** Hullaballoo **

India has won the Under-19 world cup and the team returned to India today (Mar/04). The reception that the team received is quite baffling. There were quite a lot of people who thronged the airport and a huge police force for protection. The winning team members were taken on a procession in an open bus through the city (akin to how the seniors were taken around after their T20 championship victory). Every member of the winning team has been awared Rs.15 lakh each and I am sure a few more are yet to come. I only wish that these things does not corrupt the kids and scuttle what could be a good career (you see, everybody is not Sachin!).

I was just wondering whether was it a game or a battle that these guys have won !! Compare this to the plight of a poor girl, named ILLA-VAZHAGI, a slum dweller in Chennai who went on to win the World Carrom championships twice and yet did not get anything from anybody. When one of the news channel highlighted her pathetic condition (there is no space in her house to keep the carrom board !!) TN State Govt has offered her a reward of Rupees ONE lakh !!

** Thamizhan !! **

Our GREAT Anbumani Ramdoss has done it again !!! He has ordered a 22.5% of quota for SC&STs in Medical and BDS colleges. This did not exist before. "Thamizhan", so far, has taken so many initiatives that subsequently takes mammoth proportions and ultimately destructs this nation..... this is one more to our 'proud' cap !!! "Thamizhan yendru sollada - Thalai Kunindhu Nillada" !!

All the destructive elements that haunts our Nation today were first started by Tamilians. Hatred against other language and other state people first started in TN. "Separatism" - first started in TN !! "Corruption" in mammoth levels first started in TN. Quota beyond 50% first started in TN... the list is endless.

** Resolution ? **

Last week, in one of the Muslim conventions held in Uttar Pradesh, India - the Ulemahs, have condemned terrorism. From what I read in the newspaper, The Hindu, it is clear that just a resolution was passed condemning terrorism and most of the speakers spoke in length about the 'atrocities' met out to the 'minorities' and in condemning the Govt and the policies. None of the speaker, reportedly, spoke against terrorism or Jihad. Possibly they just passed a resolution without having spoken a word against the atrocities that are being committed in the name of "Jihad". And unfortunately all the newspaper claim this as a major step forward !!

As long as we have a Govt in the centre that fears talking against Jihad and taking strict measures against Terrorists - its going to be a loss-loss situation for the nation. Govt fears that talking against terrorism will be construed as words against Muslims !! Doesn't such a stand implicate the Muslims as terrorists?? When will we have people at helm who see issues as issues and not as 'Vote' banks??

** Sujatha **

Famous tamil writer Sujatha passed away yesterday (27 Feb 08). What a great loss to the Tamil literature and Tamil society?? There is no one in the horizon to touch standards near to that of Sujatha, leaving alone taking his palce. May his soul rest in peace.

** INVASION **

The king had a fairly good and large territory to govern. One fine day, a group of rebels, numbering to around 600 decided to attack. They grouped together with a well laid out strategy. They chose one district - blocked all roads leading to the territory and carefully selected the targets!! They killed the guards in-charge of the armoury and looted all the arms and ammunitions. Around 15 died on the King's die - NOT a single death on the rebels side. A two hours operation and a rousing success.

If you thought that the above story should have happened during previous century or in one of those strife struck African nation - you are grossly wrong. This happened just before two days in Orissa, India. A group of around 600 Naxals attacked the Nayagarh district in Orissa, attacked Police Stations and Armouries of the district. NOT a token of resistance was offered.

Two days after the attack - with the Nation's entire Govt machinery behind (including IAF helicopters & bombers), there hasn't been much success in the battle against the Naxals. Govt sources say that 40% of Arms and ammunitions has been recovered so far - but knowing well about Govt responses, I highly doubt those figures.

Naxalism is rearing its ugly head in a big way in India. Its high time that the Govt acts sternly against Naxalism. But the crux of the Naxal growth, in my view, is poverty and poor infrastructure facilities to the people in rural areas.

** The Sinking Road **

Yes... its true !! Dont be surprised !! One of the roads in Chennai keeps sinking (not the entire stretch but at patches). If you dont trust my words - please do make a visit to Chennai and I will take you to that very road to see that for yourself !! This started happening a few months before on one patch of the road. Around five to six meteres stretch of the road, suddenly sunk by around two feet from the surface. Since then, this phenomenon is being witnessed on quite a few places on this stretch of the road.

Hey.. NO... it is not because of any super natural power - it is just due to the the power of the "contractor" - the person who had built a sewerage line beneath this road. At one end of the road, there is a sewerage plant and hence the sewerage line beneath this stretch of the road is a bit huge and it was constructed before two or three years. Probably the contractor had paid too much of bribe and was not able to provide a quality structure and hence this structure is giving way. This being a very busy road with lot of heavy vehicles plying on a daily basis only has made the matter worse.

A poor quality structure giving way is nothing new. But the measures taken by local authorities to fix the issue is something you can never imagine, thats the icing on the cake. One would expect that the structure beneath the road surface to be fixed first and then the road be laid ... right? But, those sane measures have been given a GO - silently, the surface, wherever its sunk is being filled with sand and stones, brought to the normal road level and being laid with a fresh layer of tar road !! Bingo !! By doing such stupid cover-up operations, they are only laying the foundation for an even greater danger. God Bless us !!

** BSNL **

We remained out of telephone link for quite a long time. I made a habit of visiting the local BSNL office almost daily to get our lines restored - only to be told that there is some major cable break and people are working on it. After the first week, the lines were restored only to go down again after two days. Today, after so many days, our telephone link still remains out of service - but to my great surprise, I see that our Broad Band link is working !! The lines may be down - but we have to keep paying the rent - that is the true meaning of "looting" !!

** ICL Vs IPL **

Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Cricket Control of India's (BCCI) new wing has got the biggies of India like Ambani, Vijay Mallaya, Sharukh sponsor the newly formed Twenty-20 teams. Thus it has taken a huge leap both financially and on conducting this tournaments as well. Ambani has taken away the Bombay team for 436 crores, Vijay Mallaya the Bangalore team for 435 crore, India Cements the Chennai team for 354 crore, Sharukh the Calcutta team for 312 crore and so goes the list. (Something similar to the Football sponsors) . Now we will have the tournaments conducted in Apr this year.

With this move, the Zee group headed ICL, with Kapil Dev at its helm, is heading towards even tougher battle. Its existence is going to be in question. The ICL was facing a tough battle right from the beginning. The BCCI got it de-recognized by the ICC !! BCCI had the players participating in ICL banned from its official list. BCCI manipulated and got the big stadiums locked for the ICL tournaments. And the final blow was this "IPL" punch!!
Whether cricket will get more interesting or not - cricketers are going to be getting more and more money !! Let us not forget the betting aspects !!

** New New YEAR **

Karunanidhi has done it again. He has got a resolution passed in assembly changing the Tamil New Year's day from Apr to Jan ("Thai" first will be Tamil New Year's day henceforth and not "Chithirai" first). It actually makes NO difference to all of us. But, on what basis did he do that? What are the benefits of this move (ofcourse other than the old man's political gimmick) ? - Luckily, for Karunanidhi, does NOT have the necessity to answer anyone - after all Tamil Hindus will take anything and everything !!

** Bharat Ratna - Cont'd **

If you have something as the HIGHEST award and honour - it should not be given to the "best amongst the AVAILABLE". To me, it is simple - if no one deserves - then DONT give it. I am not surprised at the fact that the award has not been given to anyone in the past seven years.

Talking about the yardstick - YES, I do agree that we lack one. Moreover, over a period of time, this award has been totally politicized. I think, this syndrome started when Rajiv Gandhi decided to confer the award on MGR for sheer political reasons.

Gandhi is considered above this award. So, I think, we should set such a high standard - someone of the stature and caliber of Gandhiji. I dont think that there is a single politician in our nation who deserves this award and hence my view that they should be kept out of it. I am ready to change my view, if we get to see a Politician of the calibre of Gandhiji in our life time. History provides a twisted picture when you learn that both MGR and APJ Abdul Kalam were the recipients of this award. If MGR deserves the award - then why not NT Rama Rao?

Jan 25, 2008

** Bharat Ratna **

It is shocking to see the list of names that are being recommended for "Bharat Ratna" by all the political parties. Kanshi Ram, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Karunanidhi - well, this can only be the best way to denigrate the highest award of the Nation !! I suggest that we should adopt a resolution stopping this award from going to any Politicians henceforth. That way, we will start taking notice of some real deserving candidates like MS Swaminathan and Ratan Tata.

** More Quota **

In UP, Mayawati has taken the next step on the "Quota Game". Henceforth, in UP, all the Govt contracts will be allotted based on caste Quota.

Yes, so far, it was based on (ruling) party quota - atleast behind the screens. From now on, UP will have an additional quota raj!! If a contractor is an SC/ST, he will get the contract, say, to build roads and bridges. He/She would be preferred over other caste contractors.

Generally, NO poor man can be a contractor. All contractors can enter the fray only if they have sound financial background. They need lakhs of rupees just to pay the earnest deposit. So why the hell do they need a quota??? Well, thats Indian politics for you !! We are never going to see an end to this dirty game !!

** Kumble **

Kumble took his 600th wicket today (Jan/17). He has won more matches for India than Sachin and yet, he has not got the credit that he is due for. This man has achieved everything that any cricketer would aspire for - above 600 wickets, a test century, a perfect 10 wicket in an innings and now the captain of the Indian cricket team. His statesman like handling of the crisis after the second test at Sydney thoroughly deserves a round of applause. Kudos to Kumble.

** Indian Missile Program - II **

To my posting on DRDO & Indian Missile program, the below is what my friend wrote...

---------------
Private Companies need to step in to take the research & development also. The requirements of the Armed forces shall be given and they will spend their money to find the product which shall be purchased from them after it is put to test by the end users. That's the model being followed in the U.S.

These private companies like Boeing, Dassault are allowed to sell to friendly countries after the NOC from the U.S State Department. That way, they make their money.

But I would not blame the DRDO as the Politicians made a spoilsport of the DRDO by unwanted interventions. I still remember one of the Wings of DRDO which is the CVRDE (Combat Vehicle Research Development Establishment) in Avadi where the First Director was a Alumini of Indian Institute of Science and he would have completed the MBT in time to be inducted in the 90's. Such was his excellence. But the sad part was that Rajiv Gandhi in 1985 brought in somebody above him due which he was disgruntled and resigned to go to the U.S. Other than the MBT, this guy successfully inducted the Bridge Layer Tank and the Mine Sweeping Tank which still are serving in the armed forces. I had seen able scientists working even from their homes on various drawings. Such was the commitment. Bueracracy spoiled everything.

Another classic example is the Spying case truncated against the ISRO Mahendragiri Director and finally it was proven that it was set up. Nobody would give the honest scientist his honour back. No newspaper carried that report. No politician/Bureacra t apologised for this. so what will be the morale. People now fear to do the right thing as they are always in doubt. Everybody wants to finish his service to go happily with his Full Pension in hand.

Given the independence, Any organisation can perform.People have to be trusted. Independence given. Any Big organisation first is given the Target, when it is agreed by the Organisation then What resources are required to achieve it is asked. Given the time & resources, Any organisation can perform. But the Motivating factor should also be there.

Abdul Kalam in one of his Memoirs talks about Dhawan who was the first director of ISRO when all the rockets were falling into the Sea. Dhawan used to motivate his scientists to go look at the problems associated with the failed Launch and he went to face the Press. Nobody ever knew who was Abdul Kalam or other scientists of the failed Launch. After Many failures, when the first successful Launch happened, Dhawan stepped aside and asked his Team of Scientists to go meet the Press to explain the success story. This fact was emotionally said by none other than Abdul Kalam and Dhawan is no more but his Statue has been errected in front of ISRO in Sriharikota. This is a example of True Leadership who motivated his team to
find success inspite of repeated failures. But for Dhawan, ISRO would not have been a success story. We would have been discussing as another White Elephant.

The Talents are there. It has to be properly nurtured.

** West Bengal **

West Bengal is going through a tough phase - It started with the TATA Nano car factory at Singur, then the two episodes of Nandigram and now the dreaded Bird flu !! An estimated FOUR lakh chickens and ducks need to be killed. And villagers, not happy with the compensation being given have let loose their birds making the culling process even more difficult for the officials. This time, it seems we are worst hit by the flu. Three districts have been quarantined and border with Bangladesh sealed. So far, no human loss has been reported. We can only hope that this problem is culled at the earliest and in an efficient manner.

** TATA's Car - Nano **

Finally the much talked about 'one lakh' car is out. Full credit to Ratan Tata for this achievement. To know about tech specifications and to see more fotos of the car, please click here.

TATA Dealers are so happy that they have already been flooded with calls. Looks like this car is going to have a wait period of atleast one year after registration (like our good old days when we waited eternally to get a telephone line after booking - we got the telephone line connected to our residence two years after registration). With rear engine, this car, looks like a modified version of our Autorickshaws. So what? Its going to be the world's cheapest car. At this point, all I am worried about is the traffic chaos !!

** Indian Missile Prog **

"On 8 Jan 2008, DRDO announced that it will be closing the missile programe formally, since most of the missiles in the programme are developed and inducted into Indian Armed Forces. According to statement by Dr. S Pralhada - Head controller of DRDO, new missile and weapons systems will be developed within a five-year time frame at low costs, with foreign partners and private industries."

Indian Missile Program is CLOSED and thats official now. But the above official release is only one of the sample on the series of lies that DRDO has been dishing out and fooling public. - What is Mr Pralhada talking about when he says that most of the missiles were developed and inducted? What happened to Prithvi - Ver II & III?? What happened to Agni?? If he says that the the Indian Missile Prog was successful and all that were designed were developed and inducted... why the hell is he now going for foreign and private partnership?? If it had been successful - are you not supposed to sell your successful missiles to other nations and earn revenue?? Is he saying that the programme was successful, it had accomplished what was intended for and hence is being closed down?? Could there be anything farther away from truth other than this ??

Akash, Nag, Prithvi, Agni .... - we kept reading the "success" stories in news papers and magazines. Truth is, nothing tangible was achieved and not one of those missiles were actually declared as 'success' by the user community (If it had been successful, this programme would not have been scrapped).

In my view, this DRDO, under MoD is a white elephant !! Compare that to the success story of ISRO and you will realise that DRDO is nothing but a BIG flop story. What has DRDO produced till date? Hundreds of crores of rupees is being allocated to DRDO and there is NOTHING worth the name to its credit till date. All it has produced so far is bluffs, botch ups and cover up stories. Can anyone name one single big achievement that this organisation can be credited with - other than playing dirty politics and cheap media tricks by planting "success" stories in the media??

I am sure, had only our ex-President and Father of Indian Missiles known about DRDO before, he would have fought tooth and nail for a separate agency like ISRO for the Missile development program. Unfortunately, it was not to be so and hence this sorry state of current affairs.

Ideally, not just the Missile program, Govt should CLOSE down the DRDO !! This Missile program is just ONE of the skeleton that has fallen out of the DRDO's cupboard.

** Ananda Vikatan & Benazir **

Magazine 'Ananda Vikatan' has done a five page obituary to Benazir Bhutto. Yes, even Osama Bin Laden will get five pages or even more. But what is more distressing is that the obituary is full of praise for Benazir. Why do we have to always talk high of the dead? But this is the land that even paid rich tributes to the dacoit Veerapan and Phoolan Devi (who even became an Member of Parliament) and our Chief Ministers sing in praise of terrorists !!

** Sachin **

Sachin scored his 38th century today against Australia at Sydney. For many of his critiques who were calling for his head he has replied in his own style. In the recent past, he has been in the habit of getting out in the 90s and today he broke his own jinx. More than anything, India took a first innings lead against the mighty Aussies and probably has posed a threat to the Australians continuous winning streak. It was India earlier too that stopped the Aussies juggernaut of continuous winning streaks. We still have two days to go in this test match and we still have the match wide open. But today, the day belonged to India with Sachin, Ganguly and Harbhajan chipping in with very useful knocks. Also full credit to Lakshman who played a great knock yesterday to put the Aussies on the back foot. There are not many teams that take a first innings lead against the Aussies and India having done that, definitely needs a big round of applause.

** Movies **

A few days before I wrote about the hindi movie "Taxi NO.9211". Last week I happened to see another good hindi movie "Thathaasthu", staaring Sanjay Dutt. Dutt plays the role of a father, whose son needs heart surgery and doesnt have money to pay for operation. He holds people, around 30, in one of the floors of the hospital for ransom. The story revolves around numerous characters and is well pictured. It was a wonderful movie. I have seen three of Sanjay Dutt's latest movies and he impresses me with his abilities. In Munnabhai MBBS, he played his part better than what Kamal did in the tamil remake version, Vassol Raja. Lage Raho Munnabhai was even better. 'Thathaasthu' - had a nice story line and good picturisation; importantly, it did not have any stupid song & dance sequences.

Talking about good pictures, reminds me of another wonderful movie "Malamaal Weekly". A small time shopkeeper in a poverty stricken village sells around 105 lottries, out of which one wins Rs One crore. The buyer of the lottery ticket, a drunkard, dies out of shock on hearing the news. The shopkeeper takes away the ticket so that he could claim the lottery money. Slowly, one by one, the villagers come to know about the lottery and they all get together to claim the share. Do they get the money? How money motivates and diverts people forms the story line. A full fledged comedy movie, it impresses you to a great extent. Actors, Paresh Rawal & Ompuri play their role with such a professional ease that you cant help but admire their abilities. A wonderful movie, don't miss it if you get a chance (being repeatedly telecast in one of Sony channels).
